Grand Theft Auto is going back to California.
The first trailer for Grand Theft Auto V, which developer Rockstar released Wednesday, depicts crime and palm trees in the Los Angeles-inspired city of Los Santos, first seen in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Los Santos is a major city in the state of San Andreas, an amalgamation of California, Nevada and Arizona.
The trailer seems to corroborate a Kotaku report from last week that said Grand Theft Auto V would be set in Los Angeles and feature multiple protagonists. We know the first part is correct. The trailer’s series of action sequences featuring multiple sets of characters could support the second.
Grand Theft Auto V is the latest installment in the popular open world action series, which has been both critically and commercially acclaimed since its debut in 1997. The series became a cultural phenomenon after the release of Grand Theft Auto III, a game that has been both lauded for its accomplishments and condemned for its lighthearted take on mature subject matter like violence and prostitution.
Publisher Take-Two Interactive has shipped over 114 million units of the Grand Theft Auto series in the past decade and a half.
