Hockern Takes 'Extreme Sitting' to New Level

Of all the things we take for granted — fresh air, hot pizza, Scarlett Johansson — sitting down surely ranks somewhere near the top. But no longer! A couple of enterprising young entrepreneurs in Germany want to make sure you never forget the thrill of setting your behind down after a long jaunt.

As heads of the company Salzig Sporthocker, the Landschütz brothers have been preaching the gospel of hockern for more than three years now, but this German-born street sport has only come to our attention recently. And what is hockern exactly? Well, it’s sitting.

But, really, it’s so much more than sitting. It’s about taking a specially designed stool, twirling it up in the air, doing a handstand or two with it, and then swiftly swinging it back under your butt. Take a look:

Hock ‘n roll, indeed.

Now, one of the more interesting aspects of hockern, aside from all the jumping around and sitting, is that each and every maneuver seems like it’s not actually considered a legit move unless it ends with a sit-down. I mean, you could do four cartwheels off the side of a six-story building, swinging this way and that, but not sliding the sporthocker under your rump when you’re done means you might as well have belly-flopped into a dumpster. It’s the German street equivalent of sticking the landing in Olympic gymnastics or figure skating.

So to you all you amateur hockerers, on the streets of Berlin and elsewhere, we salute you. Your ability to make sitting fun and interesting again is a true inspiration.
