Stefan Esser’s untethered iOS 4.3 jailbreak may not be coming as soon as we thought after all. The hacker mentioned that his kernel exploit is “dependent” and will work, if and only if someone identifies a new bootrom exploit or a tethered jailbreak on iOS 4.3 using the existing limera1n exploit. Since there is no public bootrom exploit for the iPad 2 at the moment, Stefan’s exploit will not currently work. All other devices such as the first generation iPad, iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, and 4G can still utilize the limera1n exploit along with the yet to be discovered iOS 4.3 exploit. Most likely the new exploit will come from either MuscleNerd, @comex, or @p0sixninja. Since, Comex has confirmed that his exploit has already been fixed by Apple. Several people are placing their bets on the Chronic Dev Team as MuscleNerd is currently busy working on unlocking the iPhone 4 permanently. Being in alpha, the exploit breaks your mobilesubstrate due to the ASLR feature available in iOS 4.3. Several jailbreak tweaks such as winterboard, sbsettings, bitesms, folder enhancer, five icon dock, and many more don’t work. However, it would be a waste if Apple kills an untethered jailbreak before Mobile Substrate works. Stefan Esser said that he will release the untethered 4.3 jailbreak if (1) there is no other untethered jailbreak by the time he is finished and (2) mobilesubstrate works. According to Stefan, Apple might release the security update (most likely via iOS 4.3.1) within a week or so to hotfix the vulnerability discovered by Charlie Miller in Mobile Safari at the Pwn2Own 2011 contest.
