Hands On Demo Of iOS 5 And iTunes In The Cloud
One of the very anticipated announcements that came out during WWDC 2011 was Apple’s new iCloud service. The service offers new cloud-based syncing and storage for iOS devices and iTunes. iCloud takes what MobileMe started and promises to turn it into something both useful and something that actually works. With iOS 5 not available to the public just yet, what exactly can existing iOS 4.3 users do that will put the new iCloud service through its paces? Effective June 6, 2011, if you had an active MobileMe account, your service has been automatically extended through June 30, 2012, at no additional charge. After this, the MobileMe service will no longer be available. What will happen to the content I have on MobileMe? Apple has announced a new service called iCloud which will be available this fall and free for iOS 5 and OS X Lion users. When you sign up for iCloud, you’ll be able to keep your me.com or mac.com email address and move your MobileMe mail, contacts, calendars, and bookmarks to the new service. Among the iCloud feature-set is the ability to wirelessly download and sync newly purchased content with up to 10 devices. Content that is already purchased such as music or iBooks can be re-downloaded for free individually. Previously, downloading already purchased music would result in your iTunes account being charged as if you never bought it before so this is a pretty welcomed change from Apple. iTunes in the Cloud (Your Music Locker): this service allows any newly purchased content, such as songs, Apps or iBooks, to be automatically synced over the air to up to 10 devices. For already purchased content, users will have the option to download each song, App or book individually. In order to show off how the service works on current iOS 4.3 and iOS 5 equipped iOS devices, the folks over at “This Is My Next” put together some short videos showing the new features in action: The first video shows Topolsky re-downloading pre-purchased music and after a couple of attempts and accepting the licensing agreement, the process worked. Another announcement and arguably the most anticipated was iOS 5. So far, iOS 5 is the biggest overhaul of Apple’s mobile operating system since the invention of the App Store. In another “This Is My Next” video, we were treated with a first hand account of what’s going on in the first beta, with notifications, widgets, and the new camera app being the main focuses of the show.
