We’ve already seen James Whelton hack the six generation iPod Nano. Now, Steven Troughton-Smith has discovered what seems to be the DFU mode for the same device. He reached it by holding down the restart button until he got a black screen and iTunes sees the device.
Steven modified iRecovery to work with the iPod Nano (had to add its DFU/Recovery USB ID) and allow it to send files. He then tested it with some files he had previously extracted from the iPod Nano 6G firmware using the extract2g tool. disk.fw and osos.fw work (one boots disk mode and the other boots to a homescreen). The other files make the Nano boot to a white screen but don’t go any further. Basically it seems that we can send encrypted firmware files to the iPod and have them execute, similar to what is used to jailbreak the iPhone. If the Nano rejects the file (ie. unsigned, invalid) it reboots. You can check out the video below:
We will keep everyone updated as soon as more iPod Nano info is gathered. Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter and/or subscribe to our RSS feed to stay on top of all your iOS device jailbreak info.
