Sony has finally broken its silence on the PlayStation 3 hacking scandal and has issued a firm warning to pirates. Hack your PS3, the manufacturer says, and prepare to see your access to the PlayStation Network “terminated permanently”. After taking legal action against Geohot for Play Station3 Jailbreak, Sony has issued an official statement on the matter and warns PS3 users: “Notice: Unauthorized circumvention devices for the PlayStation 3 system have been recently released by hackers. These devices permit the use of unauthorized or pirated software. Use of such devices or software violates the terms of the ‘System Software License Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System’ and the ‘Terms of Services and User Agreement’ for the PlayStation Network/Qriocity and its Community Code of Conduct provisions. Violation of the System Software Licence Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System invalidates the consumer guarantee for that system. In addition, copying or playing pirated software is a violation of International Copyright Laws. Consumers using circumvention devices or running unauthorized or pirated software will have access to the PlayStation Network and access to Qriocity services through PlayStation 3 system terminated permanently. “To avoid this, consumers must immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorized or pirated software from their PlayStation 3 systems.” Via Sources over at PS3-Hacks.com reported that some PlayStation jailbreakers received an email from Sony containing the statement “A circumvention device and/or unauthorized or pirated software currently resides on your PlayStation 3 system.” According to one account, “If you get error 0x8002A227, Sony banned your PS3 from the PSN.” The message comes six months after the PS3 was hacked with a USB modchip, and six weeks after the console’s tightly-guarded encryption key was discovered and distributed. During that time unscrupulous gamers have used their new-found access to install unlicensed software, pirate games and cheat online. “By identifying PlayStation 3 systems that breach our guidelines and terminating their ability to connect to PlayStation Network,” the firm says, “we are protecting our business and preserving the honest gameplay experiences that you expect and deserve.” Both Microsoft and Nintendo have take similar action against gamers found hacking their systems. Some Wii hackers have found themselves locked out of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, and Microsoft has kicked Xbox 360 hackers off Xbox Live in numerous “waves” since 2007. Affected 360 owners found their consoles unable to connect to the internet service, and blocked from using various system features like game installs and Windows Media Center.
