Superman is a surly noob searching for reality in the digital age in DC Comics’ latest reboot of the superhero’s origin story. Who knew he’d miss the musty Daily Planet more than the rest of us?

Writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist Shane Davis’ upcoming graphic novel Superman: Earth One, arriving Oct. 27, irons the obsolete media and the aw-shucks naivete out of Clark Kent’s Midwest-to-Metropolis

migration. Heavy on brooding melodrama and light on flashy superpowers, the sneak-peek pages above show a Superman that’s far from the good-natured god of comics legend or even Grant Morrison’s brainy but benevolent All-Star Superman.

According to DC’s blog The Source, which previewed Superman: Earth One Thursday morning, this “Superman for the 21st century” will have to struggle for connection to a humanity lost in its personal technology and social media. It’s the first time the superhero’s roots have been rebooted in original graphic novel form.

Superman: Earth One strays somewhat from upgraded psychodrama once an alien armada arrives. Click through the gallery above and let us know in the comments section below if you’re down with the Man of Steel’s mental retrofitting, or if you miss the happy-go-lucky farm boy you’ve become perhaps too familiar with.
