With this new update Apple is bringing a lot of the iOS features that work well on the iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad to the desktop OS X. Some of the highlighted features can be found below:
Mac App Store
The App Store has been a HUGE success on iOS and it was quite certainly one of the big reasons behind the overwhelming success that the iOS-based devices like the iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad. It now appears that it is coming to the Mac. It will be the best place to discover new apps. There will be one click downloads + auto-install and apps will update automatically. There will be a 70/30 split between free and paid apps, so whatever app you install will be licensed to work and use on all your personal Macs. It looks just like the standard App Store for iOS as well with a same look and feel overall.
LaunchPad
All the apps that you install from the App Store can be accessed from LaunchPad, which looks alot like the Springboard system many of us are familiar with from the iOS devices. Amongst the features on the LaunchPad is folder support, just like the iOS as well.
Full Screen Apps
Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) is said to feature iPad-like full-screen apps but as of right now we are a bit unclear ourselves as to what to expect exactly other then apps, well, taking up the whole screen.
Mission Control
Mission Control helps unite Expose, Dashboard, Dock, Spaces, and full screen apps all together. After making a specific gesture, you can zoom out and the desktop shows you your open apps, windows, dock, etc.
Multitouch Gestures
The multitouch gestures have also been expanded in the new OS X. They won’t be taking place on the screen anymore, as HP does on their Touchsmart PCs, but instead, will work on the touchpad. We’ll keep you updated about the new gestures as more information becomes available.
Currently that’s all that has been released about the OS X Lion. The current release date is Summer of 2011, but the Mac App Store will open within 90 days and willwork on Snow Leopard.
