It didn’t take the revered Dev-Team long at all to jailbreak Apple’s newest product, the Apple TV. Just last night, @MuscleNerd reported that he was abe to use SHAtter to make the new Apple TV restore a pre-jailbroken IPSW. This video released on the Dev-Team Blog shows @MuscleNerd using SSH to access the Apple TV, running commands as root. According to @posixninja, it only took @MuscleNerd 30 minutes to do the whole procedure as well.
The “not ready for prime time” jailbreak shows what is possible, as there is no way to load and run apps on the Apple TV just yet. However, @StealthBravo has confirmed that you can mount the Apple TV in iTunes using a microUSB cable, and TinyUmbrella (click here to get the update) has already been updated to allow users to save Apple TV SHSH blobs. Last night, @StealthBravo managed to find DFU mode: plug in a microUSB cable (with no power cord), hold the Menu and Down buttons for 6 seconds to reboot and then immediately hold Menu and Play buttons. The team is working with the devs from the original Apple TV and it looks like @nitoTV has a list of most if not all of the headers (click here to download if interested).
Seems like things are just about to get interesting. If you are one of the many people hopping aboard the Apple TV bandwagon, make sure to pick up a microUSB cable if you don’t already have one. As usual, stay tuned for more news and info regarding your Apple TV by following us on Twitter and/or subscribing to our RSS feed.
