The popular iOS hacker and modder Stefan Esser is now confirming that he is not going to be holding onto his untethered jailbreak exploit for iOS 4.3 for long. There is a possibility that he might release it for primetime availability as soon as it is ready as opposed to waiting until iOS 4.3.1 drops-in. This was confirmed in a recent tweet where he said the following: BTW: I never said that I would wait for 4.3.1 to be released. I only said that releasing it now might burn it fast. As predicted earlier, ASLR doesn’t come as a blockade to achieve the jailbreak. Stefan’s kernal exploit easily bypasses DEP (data execution prevention) and ASLR (address space layout randomization), which are two of the new key protection mechanisms built into the newest versions of iOS 4.3. This could be good news though as we might not have to wait as long as we thought we had to previously for an untethered jailbreak on iOS 4.3. For those of you who are not aware of what “untethered” means, it removes the need of hooking up your iOS device to iTunes whenever you restart the device. A demo which shows video proof of Esser’s recent exploit can be seen below: We are assuming that Apple will release the security update within a week to fix the vulnerability discovered by Charlie Miller from the Pwn2Own 2011 contest (the winner). By that time, Stefan’s exploit may possibly be patched as well. This might be the reason why Esser wants to release his exploit as soon as it is ready for prime time usage.
