It used to be that the pinnacle of an athlete’s endorsement roll was getting on the cover of a Wheaties box, creating some kind of instant collectible for diehard fans. TV commercials could also take on a life of their own (unless it became a debacle of Dan vs. Dave proportions). Then came the all-powerful video game cover, led by the billion-dollar Madden NFL franchise. (But, of course, there you have to deal with the Madden Curse, and who wants that?)
Now, it appears the next evolution in sports endorsements could be personalized, virtualized dunking sims. This one features superstar rookie Blake Griffin and is brought to you by Subway, which put Griffin through the rigors on five different dunk styles so that you could put your own noggin atop his massive frame. It’s for those of us shrimps who really have no business going above the rim on any regulation-height basketball hoop.
And it’s easy enough for ballers of any age: Just place your head in your webcam frame outline, do a little nip and tuck to get your mug snugly within the facial guides, and then it’s time to dunk, as only 2011 Slam Dunk Contest champ Blake Griffin (and your head) can.
