Many people have been wondering how much the device will cost and how it will pair up against its competitors, mainly the iPad. RIM’s co-Chief Executive Jim Balsillie is finally shedding some light on the question. He promised competitive pricing, stating the PlayBook will retail for less than $500. Currently the low end iPads currently go for $499. Analysts in the industry believe that the eventual tag price will range between $399 and $489. Although it might be lower priced than the iPad, it might not offer an offer sweet enough when compared to the iPad, especially since RIM will not initially provide the PlayBook with built-in cellular wireless capabilities.
When looking at the larger picture, competition increasing between Apple and RIM is good news for us, the consumers. It means there will be lower prices for all tablets in the future. ‘There’s going to be a lot of tablets on the market so I think pricing is going to start coming down,” said Matt Thornton, an analyst at Avian Securities LLC in Boston who spoke with Bloomgberg. “A win-win for consumers.”
