Editor’s note: This is the eighth installment in a series of guest blog posts by Simon Wheatcroft, who is training for a 100-mile ultramarathon two days from now, despite being legally blind for the past 11 years. With the race just around the corner, I have been spending the past few days relaxing. The hard training is over; it’s time to relax, hydrate and prepare myself mentally for the challenge ahead.
I’ve also been finalizing a few elements of the event concerning logistics, broadcasting and nutrition. Throughout my training, I have attempted to be as transparent as possible discussing all elements and willing to answer any questions on both my training and vision. I plan to continue this through the actual event.
The logistics of the race have been enormous. Thankfully, a large team of people banded together to assist me. After losing my entire pacing team, it was fantastic that a few people stepped forward and offered their assistance. This rapidly grew into a team of 17 people — an entire group of strangers that stepped forward and agreed to support me with their time. I’m incredibly thankful for this as I may be able to train alone but, at this stage, racing alone is simply not possible.
Everyone who has followed this guest blog and my own site can follow along on race day. I’ll be utilizing the RunKeeper Race Live system, which allows me to broadcast real-time GPS data so anyone can follow along with my progress, rather than reading about it at the end. If that wasn’t enough, I will also be live tweeting throughout the race, hopefully along with audio and video. All the streams of information will be collated on www.blind100.com. I’ll also answer any interesting questions along the way so feel free to tweet your questions with #blind100 and my team will relay the interesting ones through to me.
As for what I’ll be ingesting, after months of experimenting I’ve decided to fuel primarily through liquid nutrition in an effort to keep my water intake high and also hit my carbohydrate needs. I will not be totally abandoning my old eating ways — crisps, PB&J sandwiches and chocolate will all make an appearance at some point — so tune into the stream and see how the intake holds up.
The buildup to this run has been fantastic, and it’s been a wonderful journey. I have learnt a great deal along the way about my own physical and mental capabilities as well as learning enough about nutrition to change my major.
