The Vegan Black Metal Chef, the culinary sensation that blew everyone away last month with his devastating musical recipe for pad thai, is back at it again. And this time he’s using the flames of Satan to make three different vegan meals.
In his new YouTube instructional video (above), the chef, aka Brian Manowitz, serves up several blistering recipes, including his “All Star Redneck Medley” of baked beans, corn and mashed potatoes. (Sample advice: Crush the potatoes with a mace — show them no mercy.)
As Manowitz was preparing his latest vegan cooking opus — check out the pentagram cutting board! — Wired.com e-mailed the Orlando, Florida, resident to find out what the whole cooking-with-the-heat-of-Satan thing was all about.
Wired.com: What are you doing when you’re not being the Vegan Black Metal Chef?
Vegan Black Metal Chef: Zipping around the galaxy saving the human (and other) race(s) from the perils of supervillains. No seriously … I lead a little group called the Illuminati.”
Wired.com: How did you come up with the idea of doing a vegan black-metal cooking show on YouTube?
Vegan Black Metal Chef: I was really tired with not being able to easily answer the question, “What do vegans eat?” We get asked this a lot. The answer is simple but not so simple at the same time.
What if you had no point of reference to a hot dog, hamburger or other common food? What if you had to explain in great depth the food for people so they could understand what you are talking about? All of the sudden this question becomes more difficult.
We can’t just say, “I eat broccoli and chickpeas and onions, etc.” It has to be given in whole meal ideas. I wanted to just say, “Watch the videos!”
‘Most people think vegans just eat beans and dirt.’
Wired.com: What’s your favorite food or dish?
Vegan Black Metal Chef: Anything that is made exceptionally well. Seriously, I have no particular favorite. I like any food (vegan, of course) that tastes amazing. Most people think vegans just eat beans and dirt.
Wired.com: Your pad thai video (viewable below) quickly racked up more than 1 million views on YouTube. Were you shocked by the reaction?
Vegan Black Metal Chef: I was very surprised on how fast it all happened. I am happy that people liked it.
Wired.com: Where do your recipes come from? Are they yours or from elsewhere?
Vegan Black Metal Chef: They are all mine, and they all come from elsewhere. They are all my recipes but nothing comes out of nowhere. I pick up tips and tricks from everyone that shares them with me.
Wired.com: How long does it take for you to make a video from beginning to end?
Vegan Black Metal Chef: About two weeks if I bust my ass. The making of the video is the easy part…. It’s the audio that takes a while.
Wired.com: What are your musical influences? What are your favorite bands?
Vegan Black Metal Chef: Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, Immortal, Naglfar, Slayer, Metallica, Tool. Too many to mention.
Wired.com: Are you also in a band?
Vegan Black Metal Chef: Yes, my main project is called Forever Dawn. You can hear some old, shit recordings on the MySpace.
I would describe it as industrial symphonic black metal. I play all of the instruments in this and have a live keyboardist and bassist to play shows. I like the songs a lot, but the recordings were done when I had no idea what I was doing.
I am currently recording a new album for this project and putting together a new stage show. I also play keys in an eclectic metal band called Fields of Glass. I was not on the first album, though.
Wired.com: Do you perform in makeup and outfits similar to what you wear as Vegan Black Metal Chef?
Vegan Black Metal Chef: Yes, that is my Fields of Glass band attire.
Wired.com: What can you tell us about your recipes for Episode 2?
Vegan Black Metal Chef: Watch the video!
