One of the most common questions asked of people in the iOS jailbreak community is a simple one: why should I jailbreak my device? We recently updated you about Cydia which was working fine after a downtime of more than 86 hours due to Amazon EC2 cloud issues. After taking a little bit of rest, Jay “Saurik” Freeman, creator of Cydia was a guest in a broadcast. Head of All Things Geek Robert Scoble decided to ask this very same question of the guy behind the jailbreak App Store Cydia, Jay Freeman and filmed the answers. (check video below). During the session Jay explained the advantages of jailbreaking and iOS device (iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch) and why jailbreaking is cool. He focused more on the jailbreaking apps and extensions that can be used by anyone once you jailbreak your iDevice. Here are the few jailbreak tweaks that they have discussed: Voicemail Forwarder, WinterBoard, LockInfo, Color Keyboard, SBSettings?, Five Icon Dock, Graviboard, Barrel. Saurik also discussed a little about the jailbreaking tools available. He was accompanied by Britta Gustafson which is a new member in the Cydia Team. If you are new to jailbreaking: What is iOS Jailbreaking? Jailbreaking is a process of installing additional applications, tweaks, extensions etc. which are not available in the official Apple App Store. Apple follows a strict and standard guidelines to approve apps, and not every app makes it to the App Store. Most of the Apple rejected applications finds their way to Cydia where you can download them. What is Cydia? Cydia is a package management system for the iPhone/iPod Touch, written by Jay Freeman (Saurik), but in reality it’s a whole lot more than that; Cydia provides a UI frontend to his Open Source APT for Debian called Telesphoreo. Cydia pomonella is the scientific name for the codling moth, which is what we often think of the as the stereotypical apple worm. APT or ‘Advanced Packaging Tool,’ is the main package distribution system for Linux systems, and has been ported to many others including UNIX, Mac OS X (available in Fink), and now the iPhoneOS! There are many APT front-ends for Linux and other systems including ‘aptitude,’ and ‘Synaptic Package Manager.’ This is basically what Cydia is to the iPhone. (This also means that you can apt-get any of the cydia packges from a terminal window or ssh, right *on* the phone). With Cydia you can: See the number of apps in each category See details of what installing each app includes such as file size and functionality added Search for apps by name See changes to your currently installed apps and available upgrades See details of currently installed apps and easily manage them A full user system for app purchases and reviews A theme system An iPad version Check out the video interview: As usual, stay tuned for more tech news and info by following us on Facebook, Twitter and/or subscribing to our RSS feed.
